The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer

3.0

Despite the older age of the characters, this still reads like YA. If you can get past the fact that the actual wish game doesn't even begin to start until the halfway point, it was an interesting read and easy to finish in a day. There is definitely some suspension of reality here, but that comes with most books. The FMC is a bit much, and I see the reviews where people think what she's doing would never happen or is just weird... however, working as a nurse I've actually seen my coworkers adopt children we've come into contact with through our jobs twice in my almost 20 years in this field. So, I don't feel that aspect of the story is necessarily farfetched.

Our FMC absolutely needs therapy though, especially before she takes a child home. Parental neglect is a horrible thing. She spends the entire book explaining that NO ONE loved her. She says she was sent to live with grandparents and for the vast majority of the book you wonder if they stuck her in the closet like Harry. I'd argue therapy is almost a bigger necessity than money before bringing this child home.
