I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
5.0
WHOA. I simply could not put this down. The hype is absolutely real.
I gotta tell you, I had decided I was not going to read this. When I first saw the cover and abrasive title, I physically gasped a little. As someone who has lost their mother, it got in my craw, for sure. But then the more I saw the book everywhere and heard more about it, I realized it truly fits our author’s experience. Her memoir is not my memoir. And bonus, it makes my deceased mother feel even more like the incredible woman that she was.
Back to the book. I absolutely loved it. I listened to it on audiobook and strongly recommend that format. I have no doubt that the author reading it herself added to jarring nature of the book that makes it impossible to put down.
This book has trigger warnings for DAYS: major eating disorders, parent death, and sexual and physical abuse. But it’s definitely not non-stop trauma. I actually laughed out loud several times. McCurdy’s black humor is perfection.
Also, I have never seen iCarly, the author’s Nickelodeon show and it made no difference whatsoever so don’t let that hold you back.
I’m not going to have any magical insight that a thousand other people haven’t already said. Just go listen to it.
