Madness: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum
by Antonia Hylton
challenging
emotional
informative
A deeply human and moving look at the history of one asylum in the state of Maryland, but also at the complication relationship between mental health care and the Black community in the USA. This made me cry many many times while I was listening to the audiobook. Hylton is an incredibly gifted storyteller, researcher, and historian, and the absolute scale of the work she did to put this book together is astounding.
