Lake of the Ozarks: My Surreal Summers in a Vanishing America by Bill Geist
4.0
Bill Geist was one of the main reasons I began watching CBS Sunday Morning regularly. His wry, dry humor always had a kernel of real truth and wisdom hidden inside, and I always found him to be much wiser and more profound than he probably would be comfortable admitting to be. This book, although it does contain more than a few profound insights, is a light, humorous memoir of his youthful summers working at his uncle's hotel at the titular Lake of the Ozarks.
I found Mr. Geist's tales of coming of age among a motley crew of coworkers entertaining and fun to read. I also got a lot of enjoyment out of the story, because I live in Missouri and am familiar with many of the places, occurances, history and customs about which he writes. However, I don't think it's necessary to be familiar with Lake of the Ozarks to appreciate and enjoy the book.
