Mary Poppins
by P.L. Travers
I have not watched any Mary Poppins movie, but I can tell that the Mary Poppins that PL Travers created was very different from the ones in the movies. In the original book series, the nanny is much less smiley and pleasant. In fact, she reminds me of Ebenezer Scrooge with his "bah humbug!"
Mary Poppins in the book is haughty, somewhat mean and passive-aggressive and very vain (oh, she loves looking at her own reflection, because why shouldn't she?). This book is super quirky and unexpected, I love the whole cheeky tone PL Travers used. I understand her frustrations with her famous nanny being Disney-fied into someone pretty and happy. In a way, PL Travers grumpiness was a lot like her own version Mary Poppins.
Although I enjoyed the book, each chapter was about a random incident involving the nanny, it didn't have a continous plot which I would have preferred. There was a part that sounded a little racist too, and then I read that the version I read was actually a revised version from the original which was even worse but which Travers did revise after some negative feedback.
Still, I look forward to watching Disney's Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns to compare though!
