This is a very slow-paced reflection on the importance of submission and obedience. There is a very string Anglo-Catholic theme to the novel and Yonge clearly had developed a fear of socialism and change. Shy has a very dry sense of humour and is clearly accomplished writer but the almost non-existent plot is very dull.
