The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives by Dashka Slater

5.0

I really, really loved this book. It teaches such important lessons on not only empathy and forgiveness, but it also gives the reader facts and statistics about how broken the juvenile justice system is via primary sources scattered throughout the story.

I learned about various gender pronouns and their definitions and got a fascinating glance into the non-binary community. I questioned my own biases when it comes to being fundamentally against trying juveniles as adults, while also being (obviously) anti-hate crimes.

The book is equal parts touching, engaging, and deeply maddening. It’s accessible in its language- the author incorporated texts, quotes, letters, articles, and stories from Sasha, Richard, and those in their community at the time before, during, and after Sasha was lit on fire on Bus 57. Highly recommend.
