Mel Fell by Corey R. Tabor

funny inspiring lighthearted
Caldecott Winner, Age level: Kindergarten - 2nd grade, published on February 2nd, 2021. This story is about a brave baby kingfisher that wants to learn to fly. Despite the hesitations of her siblings, she decided to try to fly but ended up falling past the other animals that lived around her. Mel fell into the water below and grabbed a fish, all while finally developing the ability to fly back up to her nest! In the story, Mel took a huge risk to try and test her wings to fly. I think that this could be a very valuable lesson to teach my students about. Taking risks and facing your fears can lead to great reward! Students will also be very engaged by the unusual setup of the book with the advanced visuals and changing direction of the text. I think that this book is very simple but engaging at the same time, while providing them with encouragement and confidence that they are capable of doing hard things.
