kanissa 's review for:
The Hot Zone
by Richard Preston
I first read this as part of my AP Biology 2 class in high school. I remembered that I enjoyed it then, and I still enjoyed it now. (At least as much as one can enjoy reading a book about ebola, but I guess you know what I mean.) I thought, given the events of the past few years, that this was a timely choice to re-read.
Although this is non-fiction, Preston's writing moves at a fast pace, and at times it reads almost like a movie script. This is good for engagement, and you do get sucked into this morbid, frightening story. There are some scientific explanations - I think so you can understand just how really awful ebola can be - but nothing too dense or too technical for most readers.
It does help a bit that you know going into this that nothing truly awful happened in Reston, VA, but once you understand just how much of a terrible crisis it could have been you'll have a bit of a rush.
