Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes
5.0

This is one of the best domestic thrillers I've ever read.
Everything about this book is perfect. The parallel timelines that showcase the differences between Before and After Catherine and her dealings with OCD and PTSD (that particularly was done brilliantly. I get second-handed anxiety just by reading Cathy check and check the locks again.). Characters are done right. Lee appeared at first as if he sauntered out of all those New Adult dark romance fantasy stalker fics, oozing sex and control issues. To watch him slowly change into his true colours: a sadistic psychopath especially from the perspective of Cathy was both horrifying and fascinating. Lee's deterioration and Cathy's understanding unfolds slowly so that we get to experience it as Cathy does-her confusion, denial and even when she saw things clearly, the bitterness of reality. That it is not often as easy as an outsider might think to just leave the guy.

I saw reviewers saying they couldn't believe Cathy's friends sided with him, but I can. These days, most girls end up with these commitment phobes, guys who dgaf that when they see an opposite of that, a picture perfect couple or a doting, caring man, the idea of something sinister happening could be hard to fathom. I've seen girls scold their friend because she thinks her man is clingy. 'Do you know how rare is that? I wish my man were like that' etc. After all, as the success of those erotica prove, these 'possessive alpha males' tend to feature a lot in women's fantasies and because of that sometimes, obsession can be mistaken as attention and mad jealousy as love. Which is why I'm so tired of all those creepy NA heroes and Amen to this book, it shatters those fantasies into 1000 pieces. For good measure, repeat after me: A psycho is a psycho, even if he's hot.

P.S: Someone give Stuart 'Book Boyfriend of the Year' award. A kind-hearted softie trained in mental health who will stay with you every step of the hard road to recovery? Where do I sign up for one?
