Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez

5.0

I loved this novel. Now that I find out its very closely based on a true story inspired by the life of Cuban artist Ana Mendieta and her mercurial relationship with the minimalist sculptor Carl Andre. While I do love the novel, I am a little uneasy after reading this article: (https://www.cliffsnotes.com/study-notes/5064186) explaing the unfairness that the niece of Ana is about not having any input with how her aunt's story is told. But I do think this story was so beautifully written I have to ask the author why she didn't collaborate with the estate. Either way this novel brings up dynamics I can closely relate to being a latina, woman, in a male dominated career field and how many of my personal experiances dictate how I feel. I dont know if that is why I loved this novel and the power dynamics of a "alpha" female and an "insecure" alpha male. I just love all the Santaria and spiritual aspects of this story too. I laughed so hard at some of Anita's antics. I loved it! lol

here are some other articles or transcripts of interviews for you guys if you want to hear what the author has to say about this novle and the real life Ana Mendieta.
