On an alien planet where the men outnumber the women 20:1 and having love/a mate is the most coveted thing, Alice finds herself kidnapped as a part of a breeding experiment. In this same facility, Alice meets Luka – an alien who is also imprisoned there. The scientists claim that Luka recognized her as his mate, even while they had him drugged and delirious. Though they can’t communicate and are both being treated wretchedly, they form a sort of bond while trapped together, even under the scrutiny of their dictated interactions. However, eventually they’ll need to find out if their relationship can be the same when threat of torture isn’t looming over them in the outside world.

This is the second book in The Clecanian Series, though it can be read as a standalone.

I’m seriously so sad. I LOVED Choosing Theo and had such high hopes for this book. 😭 In the end, found Jade (the protagonist) sadly annoying as she continued to acknowledge that she was on an alien planet with different customs but still chose to behave like she wasn’t. The plot for this one was so much more complex than the first book and there was so much to explore, but it just seemed to fall flat on pretty much any aspect of the society or romance I found interesting. I had to force myself to finish the book and I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the series.

The one saving grace I can give this book was the narrator in the audiobook. He had the PERFECT voice for the role.

Pros:
Luka was a decently interesting character
THE NARRATOR! 🔥

Cons:
Unlikable Main Character
Miscommunication Trope
Slow Start to the Book
