Portal quest where a young hero and his dog journey to a blighted fairytale realm. The vernacular and pop culture references are retro at times (TCM does a lot of heavy lifting) and the worldbuilding leans on familiarity in what’s essentially an Ozian throwback, with tendrils of eldritch horror and lots of heart. 

Bonus points for being a Stephen King book with a dog in it that I didn’t have to put in the freezer.
