Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

5.0

This retelling of the interwoven stories of women in Greek mythology is such a wonderfully written book. I applaud Jennifer Saint for how she is able to convey the emotions and thoughts of women I didn't really focus on when I usually think of Theseus and the Minotaur.

Although advertised as a retelling of Theseus and the Minotaur, this book really is a retelling of the events of the entire lives of Ariadne and her younger sister, Phaedra. All the smaller myths involving them are also retold, and it was really interesting to see all of these come together in this one novel. As a student who also enjoys Greek mythology, I knew their stories in segments, not quite piecing them all together in my mind, but this book was a fantastic and new way to see their stories unfold in a natural and chronological order that flowed beautifully.

I was able to finish this book in one day because it is truly such a page turner. I truly felt like I was sailing alongside Ariadne and walking through Athens with Phaedra. What a beautifully written story giving a much needed light on the stories of the women in myth who are so easily looked over.

If you like Greek mythology, or enjoyed books like Circe or Song of Achilles, this is definitely a book you need to read.
