I found this a difficult read when David was a youngster. His life was so downtrodden and he was so gullible, I almost gave the whole book a pass. And I hated so many characters so much it was hard to read about them. But Dickens has a way with describing characters. It’s mesmerizing and lyrical. I love how Dickens touched on such difficult topics and did so delicately. Little Em’ly’s life story is so so sad, especially during Dickens’ time, and he handled it so well. And some characters I hated I ended up loving—am I talking about you Aunt Betsey? “Janet! Donkeys!” Is there anything more memorable than that?? I’ll read this again one day. Knowing how it ends will help me deal with David’s early grief!
