Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara by Emily Zemler

Did not finish book. Stopped at 37%.
This DNF has almost nothing to do with the content, but rather the way the eARC itself is formatted. I understand ARCs are still likely undergoing changes, but if they’re being released to the public in any manner, I expect to be able to consume the content with little to no problem.

I’m fine with a majority of the pictures being unavailable since this is an advance copy, what I’m not okay with is full sentences being interrupted only to continue several pages later; images breaking up words; two separate sections being so mangled together I have no idea where my original thread was left let alone where it went.

I will say, from the content I was able to decipher, this seems like more of a Disney Adult publication, than for someone casually interested. There’s lots and lots of praise but absolutely no discussion on how problematic Disney has a tendency to be. For example, there’s no acknowledgment that Disney’s first Black princess spent 3/4 of her movie as a frog, or that there was such backlash to the live-action Mulan for multiple reasons.

I was also looking for more historical context, maybe some deep delving into how Disney found these characters, how they chose to adapt them, and the history behind the story (or, in some cases, the person herself). It’s all very surface and prideful, like “Look at all these neat things Disney has done since the ‘30s!”

I think I’ll return to this once it’s properly published, because I really do love the princesses, and I’ve always been thoroughly obsessed with fairytales. Hopefully since I have more than half of the book left, there will be some saving grace in the future.

I received an eARC from Edelweiss & Epic Ink in exchange for an honest review.
