I did feel it got a little slow in the middle of the book but once I hit the last third it picked up. The characters all had a very distinct voice. I honestly found Maddie slightly annoying but you do not have to like every character completely , that would be a pretty boring book. I listened to the audiobook version which I highly recommend.
