Just finished the book — haven’t watched the show yet since I really wanted to experience the story in its original form first. If this is your first read-through of A Game of Thrones, do yourself a favor and keep track of the characters. Every time a new one shows up, try to commit them to memory.
Make mental connections between people — some characters you least expect are actually related, and if you don’t remember their backstory, you’ll totally miss those subtle reveals.
Also, sometimes I just ask ChatGPT who a character is. Pro tip: make sure to tell it that you’re only just starting the series and don’t want any spoilers. Seriously. It means well, but it will casually ruthlessly ruin your life if you’re not specific.
And give yourself a break trying to use the tiny map at the front of the book. It’s so small the letters might as well be in Valyrian, and forget about actually finding any of the smaller towns — it’s way too detailed to be helpful. Just use https://quartermaester.info. It’s interactive, it’s easy, and most importantly, you can adjust your position in the book so you don’t get spoilers. Lifesaver.
I’m sure I missed a ton, and honestly? This might be the only series that makes me want to reread just to catch what flew over my head the first time.
