Honestly, I'm a bit let down. How exactly was this better than the first book? Sure, the scope is bigger (spanning the solar system now) and the stakes are higher, but the characters stay more or less the same as they were before and the trajectory of Darrow's ascent to power continues just as predictably.

I was really hoping to see some interesting character development in Darrow, but I mostly still feel indifferent towards him after all this time. I was expecting some more inner struggles, as he gains more and more power and becomes more entrenched in gold society. But his moral compass remains as unwavering as ever. He's a good person, always has an ace up his sleeve when plans go awry, and has plot armour thick enough to keep him alive through every dire situation. In short, he's boring. There are definitely things I like about him. How he openly shows affection for his friends for example. That's quite rare for a male MC. And of course it is satisfying to see a character be badass and outsmart his enemies. It all just happened too easily it seemed. Sure, he makes some mistakes and failes a few times, but he always has plans within plans and few people to pose a serious challenge to him. This made the plot rather boring as well, as it was mostly a bunch of fighting and planning for Darrow to gain more power.

So Yeah, I gave this series an honest chance, but it's just not clicking with me. It's not bad, just meh. And if that's all it is, the books are too long to continue reading. If the first book didn't do it for you, I'd advise you to just stop there. I don't see the jump in quality in the second book everyone was talking about.
