The House of Hope and Fear: Life in a Big City Hospital by Audrey Young

5.0

Provided me with a lot more background on the place where I work: Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Young's tale is as much about health care in a large publicly funded hospital as it is a social commentary on why people end up in the ER and so much is spent on patients who need much more than insulin: a roof over their heads, regular, healthy diet and preventative care. Interesting she wrote the book before the Affordable Care Act, and the last chapter makes a plea for universal health insurance, so I'd be interested to read what she thinks about what has happened in the last five years. I'd recommend the book for anyone interested in health justice.
