Stone Butch Blues should be mandatory reading for any queer person in the US. It tells the story of a queer person in the mid to late 20th century, and their journey through that. We learn about the experience of someone who, in this day and age, would be called “transgender”, but when there was no true word to define that identity at the time. Getting to read the story of Jess was emotional, heart-breaking, and heart-warming. It emphasizes the need for community no matter your identity, the need for human connection, for love, for vulnerability. Being able to read this was a gift.
