A friend recommended this book after we were all coming off the high of the latest Fourth Wing release. I vaguely knew Rebecca Yarros wrote contemporary romance, but wasn't sure I'd enjoy the emotional drama without dragons. However, this was a fun ride!

While Hudson isn't a 6'5" shadow daddy, he is a very ripped 6'2" Coast Guard rescue swimmer. That's about as heroic as you can get in real life, so well done Yarros. Similarly, Allie is an exemplary professional ballerina. That means she puts her body through incredible pain in pursuit of art and acclaim. Sound like any other fictional character we know?

The romance trope here is a mix of friends to lovers, second chance, and across the tracks (ie. Rich vs blue collar). There's a LOT of family drama and almost too many siblings to keep track of. The parents are nearly nonexistent, which makes sense since our leads are nearly 30.

There is an underlying mystery to why Hudson and Allie haven't connected in 11 years (just so we can say over a decade) and what's going on with Allie's mom. I know ballet is incredibly tough but wow that mom was mean!

There are 3-4 spicy scenes (depending on where talk rates for you) and they are in creative locales. The last one was my favorite.

Yes, there is some miscommunication and inability to discuss different options or paths. I've never had a singular dream (location to live or career to follow) but I think people should be adaptable as they age and gain experience. Real love will make it work.
