hmc3898 's review for:
F*uck Anxiety is filled with 101 anxiety spiral-stopping exercises, inspiring pep talks, and calm-the-F-down activities. I have to admit I was intrigued by this book because of the title. I despise the "F" word, but I know it's something that is in my kids vocabulary (just not around me). So the title spoke to me in terms of possibly being relatable for my 15 year old who struggles with anxiety like I do.
F*uck Anxiety did not disappoint! The wording is down to earth and gritty. Lauren takes something that so many struggle with and makes you feel like you can grab it by the balls and take control. I loved it so much I bought a paperback copy of it for my daughter! It offers so much practical, stuff you can do right now, advice and to action ideas to help you through all kinds of anxiety situations.
I was even surprised to find she recommends some things that I already naturally gravitate to that are stress and anxiety reducing. Things like search-a-word puzzles and coloring. I have a coloring app on my iPad my husband recently found for me and I find it soothing. Little did I know it can actually be a stress reducer! no wonder I gravitate towards it!
Just one of the many things she says that made me laugh out loud, or take a deep breathe and feel like you are not alone, and that you can beat anxiety: "Anxiety is like your whole nervous system bleeding, but we just can't see it. But that doesn't make it any less real that than that stabby leg wound. And most of the time, we feel it super intensely. Our stomachs turn and roil. Our breath goes all raggedy. We become a big ol' ball of freak-the-f-out, and we have no idea what to do. So think of this book like the first aid kit you'd run for if you were bleeding inside."
This book is one that I envision on a nightstand, dogeared and worn as it feels like you have friend within the book who is there to listen and guide you. A friend who is downright witty and funny. Helping you to keep it real as you navigate the world through your anxiety. This is a refer to over and over again type of "go-to" book.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC
