Northwood: A Novella by Maryse Meijer
4.0

This book as much an intensely experimental project as it was a successful one— both to their extremes. A novel written almost entirely in poems that range from tight verse to disparate words splattered in white ink across its black pages, Northwood explores all of the things tied to love that aren’t in fact love at all. A woman has lost her partner, and we live her grief through memories of abuse and manipulation, violent sex, and the drawing classes that she teaches. A visual experience more than an auditory one, this book explores what it is to give form to mourning: in pencil and then in ink.
