Stranded: A White-Knuckle Adventure Above and Below the Sea by Beverley Scherberger

1.0

Well this is definitely not what I expected. To me it wasn’t the super adventurous book I thought it would be. The action that happens is short lived with no big repercussions. Everything seems to work out for them. They miraculously can always find loads of food, can build a whole shelter with a locking DOOR of all things. Cooking? Easy. Constructing hats? Simple. Making a fire using the glass of their mask? A piece of cake. Come on. You’re stranded on an island not everything should come that easily. Yeah they have things happen but it’s nothing that is very long lasting, they get over everything in the next scene. They also find genius orangutans that help with their every whim.

The romance? A joke let’s be honest, I wouldn’t have even included that in the book description tbh. The love interest is very one dimensional with no substance and the written out accent in his dialogue is kinda annoying. The FMC is terrified of bugs and her reactions were ridiculous, clawing herself until she bled and throwing up? Let’s feed into the stereotypical girls are all cowards. The other woman is no better. Actually slaps one of the orangutans that was helping her. Get a grip. Also I find it interesting none of them had ANY side effects from drinking the water they find all over.

When it’s the big battle of the orangutans versus the monkeys and out of no where all of the monkeys are defeated because the cave collapses with no explanation? BFFR. When Robbie goes over the cliff they don’t even act like it bothers them. No one even mentioned it with dialogue they just went about the rest of their day. BFFR. Seemed like they cared more about the mask and the man they met for less than 24 hours than than him. Seems like the death of their friend deserved a conversation.

Something I’ve noticed in this book is there’s a lot of telling us what’s happening internally. What I mean by that is for example when the ship comes to rescue them and the sharks attack the boat and kill the crew trying to help there was no dialogue it was all just the FMC describing the scene and then it was over done everyone moves on. You’re telling me sharks jumping out of the water and killing the crew doesn’t warrant a conversation?????? I feel like that’s why we don’t really know these characters or care about them because they’re not given the opportunity to give substance.
