They dream of dividends, and their dividends are the ruin of mankind.

Wow was this play ahead of its time. I happened to read this only a few months after playing through Detroit: Become Human (which is a great game btw), and the similarities between the works really struck me. It's incredible that the first use of the word 'robot' utilises the same themes as most of the more current staples of the genre (Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, iRobot, Detroit, etc).

I was also struck by the commentary on consumerism and capitalism. At one point in the book a character is despairing of the possible end of the human race, and asks for just a hundred more years for humankind. What we could achieve in a hundred years!

Well, we've had our hundred years and are currently on our way to destroying our species and the planet for similarly pointless and depressing reasons as written here.
