Luka by Jane Harvey-Berrick
5.0
6+ AMAZING stars
Luka is the second book in the Rhythm series and follows titular character who we first met in Slave to the Rhythm. I LOVED the first book and was so excited to hear that we were getting more of these characters. Let me tell you this book was just as good, if not better, than the first!!! This story had me feeling the gamut of emotions...half the time my heart was in my throat.
"Then the music blasted out in an explosion of sound and light, and I was on stage, alive, powerful, doing what I was born to do."
Luka lives to dance. For the past year, he has been on tour with Slave, the show based on events from the first book. There, he has become close friends with all the dancers, but one woman in particular, wants more. But Luka does not get involved with colleagues and doesn't do relationships. So they part ways for the summer, as the show takes a break.
"I couldn't imagine willingly being with just one person for the rest of my life. And despite the crazy, full-on, balls-to-the-wall way I lived, I believed in the possibility...for other people."
Luka learned at a early age that he was attracted to both men and women. While on vacation, he meets a man and ends up spending the night with him. This is where things start to change for Luka. He begins to open himself up to having a relationship. Unfortunately, things are complicated by the truth Luka discovers...his new lover is the brother of his friend from the tour.
"I meet someone, and there's a connection or there isn't. It doesn't matter if they're male or female, gay or straight. It's a connection."
Then things really get complicated when Luka's friend returns home from the summer. Suddenly, Luka is caught in the middle between two people he loves...His whole life is turned upside down and inside out. My heart broke for Luka. He is such a good man, always looking out for his friends and family. He hasn't had an easy life and just when he thinks he can have some sort of happiness, the rug is pulled out from beneath him.
"Love made you soar, made you fly and set you free-and then it let you freefall until you were smashed and bleeding on the ground."
As always, the writing was superb, sucking me in from the start. There are quite a few twists as well, that kept me from guessing where the story was headed. I really did LOVE everything about this book, and I thought the ending was perfect. When I closed the book, I didn't want it to be over, and I was left wanting more of these characters. I hope we get more books in this series!!!!
"Love hurt. Love flayed you raw and left your skin hanging from your body in bloody strips. It left you branded and burned. Ultimately, love was the worst thing that could happen to a human being. In my opinion."
