The Complete Stories by Flannery O'Connor

5.0

in college i was assigned to read "a late encounter with the enemy" and loved it, so i've been meaning to read this collection for several years now. all of her short stories are published in the order in which they were written, and it was interesting to see her progress as a writer while i read.

it's hard to describe what i love so much about these stories. there's something about the depravity of the characters, the disappointments, the ridiculous and horrifying deaths. and mixed in with this are moments that make me laugh my ass off.

my favorite was actually one of her earlier ones i'd never read before- "enoch & the gorilla." other highlights include "the enduring chill" "good country people" and "a good man is hard to find."

*note: i took breaks to read other material between every story or two that i read in here...and i think the collection was much more enjoyable for that.
