The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson
4.0

Hunter S Thompson is one of the most important non-fiction writers of the 20th century. I’ve read a lot of his work and not only did it change the way we consider how non-fiction should be told, but in general American literature both nonfiction and fiction would not be the same. This previously unpublished manuscript until the late 90s feels like a Proto gonzo script, the hallucinogenic parts are mild, but the antiestablishment rage, the frustration and acceptance of journalism as core to the American dream; both exist here. It feels like a young artist feeling his own, and is a good read. The illusions to Horacio, Alger, Scott, Fitzgerald, and Hemingway are clear the intense intelligence of Thompson makes this book work, but after you will need a rum drink.
