I feel kinda neutral abt this book… I didn’t feel connected to the characters or emotionally tied to them. I of course appreciate queer adult fantasy but the story was kind of… a lot of nothing. I don’t think the gender discovery of Calla really made sense in this world of magic (they can shape-shift into wolves- animals that don’t have gender lol- yet they have a strict male/female gender binary??? how does that make sense? i get binary gender constructs anyways don’t make sense but it just didn’t fit into this magic/world building well enough). I don’t really like the tired tropes of claiming a partner/mates really hammering in this possessiveness… icky romance to me. There were definitely parts I enjoyed but overall kinda disappointing! I don’t think I’ll want to read the second one- tbh I wish there was more rep of sapphic relationships so if the second one has the perspectives of Brair and Maez I’d be more interested fs..
