A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick

3.0

This has been sitting on my TBR list about 18 months. I knew that it was going to be a dark, atmospheric gothic-style story set in the brutal Midwest winter, but I was a bit unprepared with the obsession/preoccupation with the main character's sex lives. It would not be an exaggeration to say that sex, the thought of sex, the emotions (or lack thereof) related to sex, were mentioned on every page. And that was only alternated with the drugs and other poisons.

It kept me reading to figure out when each of the characters would realize they were being had, but I didn't really feel for any of them. Thye were all pretty messed up, and not even in unique ways.

Instead, I felt for the one-off stories that formed the inspiration for the novel. The author's reference to his inspiration may serve to be the redemption for wasting time on this book.
