Boss by Tracy Brown

3.0

I received Boss by Tracy Brown as a Goodreads Giveaway. This is the first book that I have read by this author.

Boss tells the story of Crystal Scott, editor in chief of one of the hottest magazines on the market as the magazine, Hipster, is taken over by the former boss's son, Troy Mitchell. Unable to keep their personal and professional lives separate for long, Crystal and Troy plunge headfirst into a sultry and passionate romance that proves quickly to be more than just a physical relationship. As the relationship escalates to higher levels, Troy quickly learns that things aren't quite as they seem with Crystal, as the demons that entwine both of their pasts come to the surface in an abrupt way.

I was not sure what to expect, but found myself pleasantly surprised. Tracy Brown is a great storyteller. The plot is intriguing and continually evolving, the characters are relatable and diverse, and she does a fairly good job of writing sexually provocative scenes in a way that isn't cheesy or cliché, something not a lot of authors are able to do well. The story is written in third person and is told primarily from Crystal's perspective, although it does alternate to other character's point of view. The transition from one character to another is very stilted and interrupts the otherwise easy flow of the book. My other criticism is that almost the entire second half of the book takes the reader back to Crystal and Troy's past, with only the last 10 pages bringing the reader back to the present to draw it to conclusion. While the glimpse back in time is obviously important to understanding Troy and Crystal's history as well as Crystal's motivations that led to where the reader meets her at the beginning of the book, it almost felt like it was too much; I did not feel it was necessary to spend half of the book on the past and it could have adequately been told in a fraction of that length by sparing some of the unnecessary detail. The ending was too abrupt for my taste. Despite that, Brown keeps the reader hooked, and this book proved to be a quick read.

This is a great book for those who enjoy reading about family's feuding, strong female characters, years of plotting revenge, and erotic romance.
