The Arrangements by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

4.0

I think this story humanized the characters we've been seeing on television for the last year or longer in a way that no other "authentic" or critical newscasts have done. In a way, the story made me wonder that who/what really captures the inner lives of those who experience widespread censure in the way Mr. Trump and his family have been facing. I also like how the story highlights exactly how the characters relate to each other. The author's style has been glorious in capturing every finery and detail, and even with a gentle guide to the character's constitutions, instead of letting everything be surmised by itself. Some of the notable mentions are how Melania relates to her husband's needs in private, how she notices that what her husband wants from a daughter are exactly what he would never tolerate from a wife, the use of "European" as a negative, out-worldly and still a lifestyle to be aspired to and the complete lack of closeness that Melania has with her frequent visitors and members of the household (Tiffany, Janelle, etc.)
