Overall the plot was interesting enough to keep me reading. However, I did find the writing style a little jarring at times. Major parts of the plot were breezed over (mostly battles) as though they weren't all that important. But as this story had a lot of political intrigue and "plots" running through it I thought it would have been interesting to see how the battles were won/lost. There was a lot of interesting commentary on gender and the roles they play in (a medieval chinese) society which were strangely relatable. I enjoyed one POV more than the others so sometimes I grew a little bored with the long chapters of characters I wasn't that interested in. As it turns out, I don't much like any of the characters. Especially the main (titled) one! I'm not sure I will pick up the next book in the series as I can't stand to read from her perspective anymore.
