As a long time lover of fairy tales and fantasy that feels rooted in the real ways in which people interact and engage, this novel was straight up my alley. I adored Agnieszka from the first page and felt that many of the other characters quickly stepped away from story book tropes and cardboard cut out feelings to become real and vivid people in their own right. I will say that I was not totally convinced by the love story angle (although I did believe the lust) and wish there had been a little more build up. Still, this novel is written beautifully and very much in the style of a fairy tale without feeling overly stilted or flowery--it made me want to go out and read more of Novik's novels immediately!

A lovely, lovely read for anyone who loves fantasy.
