Bess of Hardwick: First Lady of Chatsworth, 1527-1608
by Mary S. Lovell
I was completely amazed by this book. Lovell was thorough in her research and captivating in her writing, and had me hooked from start to finish.
I only knew the bare facts about Bess before reading this, and thus found the biography extremely informative. This was a woman who not only survived one of the most turbulent periods in English history, but thrived too. She outlasted the Tudors and saw the dawn of the Stuart era, outliving four husbands and practically everyone of her generation. In a world where women were supposed to confine themselves to the home sphere and rely on the men in their lives, she boldly went out into the world and created a place for herself.
A fascinating read from beginning to end. For anyone interested in the other inhabitants of the Tudor era beyond the monarchs themselves.
