Pew
by Catherine Lacey
“How much harm did we cause without knowing it? How much harm did we cause when we were certain we were doing such good?”
this is such high art that some of it went over my head; even so, i found Pew an incredibly effective meditation on personal responsibility and what we owe our community. the epigraph is especially telling — it’s a quote from ursula k le guin’s “the ones who walk away from omelas,” which is a short story about sacrifice & groupthink so chilling and particular that i still think of it ten years after reading for the first time. Pew is in the same business as “omelas,” but it’s much more cerebral and careful. so yeah: i dug it
