Ju fortare jag går, desto mindre är jag by Kjersti A. Skomsvold

I was surprised by how much I liked this. As far as fiction goes, this might very well be my favourite of the year thus far. I think part of the charm is the relatability I found in both the main character and the way of approaching life generally (I think there are quite a few details that felt to me very Scandinavian, which I enjoyed). I find it slightly ironical that I (23-year old) relate to a 70-something year old woman, but there you go. The story is not a grand one, it's a very down to earth depiction of the days passing in an old couple's life. The writing style reminded me somehow of Tove Jansson (more the atmosphere it created than actual writing), also the main character reminded me of "Mamma Mu", a talking cow from a comic I read as a kid. I'm not sure why I made this connection, perhaps because they both seem to have such interesting worlds in their heads, quirky and odd ways of thinking.

Really, I don't know how to describe it. The main character is weird, but was also very relatable to me. It's a short book, but it made me giggle and laugh and smile so many times, it almost felt nostalgic too. And the writing is very interesting. I would gladly read more from Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold - I'm curious to see how much of my enjoyment came from her writing, and how much came from the main character, Mathea.
