As much as I wanted to I couldn't bring myself to finish it - reflected in the low rating. I could understand what Camara Laye was doing (challenging the imperial/European gaze), but I did need the wonderful introduction in this edition to help.
Unfortunately I found the protagonist so annoying that it drove me to abandon the book. I was quite disappointed with myself for not finishing it, and felt that I had completely missed the point.
