Room for a Stranger by Melanie Cheng

3.0

Dancing between 3 and 4 stars on this one.

The quick, easy & colloquial writing belies the deeper narratives and cultural commentary that this book covers. Cheng details the everyday of two people from opposite ends of the social spectrum and in doing so she shines a light on the multitude of experiences we all go through - including the stranger next door.

After a heavy couple of months life wise this was such a joy to read because it didn’t demand anything from me. The characters are easy, not to say they lack complexity. These are two people from completely marginalised parts of Western society and Cheng does a brilliant job of bringing them to life. I truly felt for them in the final chapters.

A simple read and acute reminder to always dig deep for the empathy we so easily miss for others.
