Different for Boys by Patrick Ness

4.0

This short but powerful novel delves into the coming-of-age themes of queerness and sexuality. Patrick Ness tackles towering themes of queerness in less-progressive locations, internalised homophobia and young gay relationships. He then wraps them up with an overarching question in the queer community - what defines queer sex and virginity? This question, which is common in queer language discussion but less common in queer fiction, offers a unique approach to the way youth question and enter the LGBTQIA+ sphere.

Hard-hitting, authentic relationships between young men, their friends and their peers sit alongside unique and thoughtful illustrations by Tea Bendix, delivering what deserves to be a staple in young, queer contemporary fiction.
