The Dark Prophecy
by Rick Riordan
4.5 stars truly.
Let me thinketh and thou shall readeth my review. (That Shakespearean arrow cracked me up.)
Okay first I'd like to mention that I am not as big a fan of Apollo as some people. I just really get angry and easily frustrated with him, probably because he was a god, and he still thinks as if he's high and mighty, but he's not anymore so it makes his "high and mighty" mindset problematic in my mind. I know I'm going kinda hard on him since he's been a god for thousands of years, but the gods are so problematic because of their limited thinking, and that's why Luke did what he did. I think I'm so used to Percy's disgusted mindset with the gods that it's so weird for me to be sympathizing and liking a god, and it is difficult for me to truly enjoy Apollo as much Percy. I prefer Apollo to Jason Grace, but Percy's mindset and thinking is so similar to my own that I can so easily relate to him and his thought process, but with Apollo I'm constantly thinking "REALLY" or "SERIOUSLY?" So it's more difficulty for me to like him.
I love the representation in Rick's books. Now we have an old, soft, badass, pro-animals, f/f couple and I love it. They left Artemis's hunters because hunters don't love (whether it's m/f or f/f) and they grew old together. :)))) Jo and Emmie, who Apollo just happened to give immortality to. Their relationship just seems so pure and loving and honest.:)))
Figures their daughter might be Apollo's spawn. HOW CAN YOU FORGET SIRING A KID SERIOUSLY APOLLO? (This situation just added to my disliking Apollo as well.) Apollo always rags on Zeus for being a terrible father (rightfully so), but is he any better?!?!
I don't think so.
Meg's betrayal in the last book wounded me (and Apollo) and it was as SO wonderful to have Meg back
on our side again because she's a great character. Given this book's insights into her past, it looks like she has a lot of darkness and guilt inside her, and I just need someone to talk to her and help her work through it. Also, Meg is HELLA powerful. Not only is she young, she's a child of Demeter, who aren't usually powerful, but Meg must have gotten a shit ton of power because she can control plants and use them to her advantage. Either that or all Demeter kids are powerful but underestimated. Her abilities with swords are impressive because she's so young. She's dedicated and resilient and a great ally, friend, and source of comic relief. Not sure I'm okay with her constantly punching Apollo just because of the tone and circumstances that sets, but otherwise she's probably my favorite character. Also her clothes are always enjoyable to hear about.
Reading about Calypso and Leo was fantastic. I love seeing their relationship develop with some troubles and arguments because that's REALISTIC. Plus I love their characters as well. Calypso punched a robot thing, breaking her hand, and then proceeded to kick said robot, breaking her foot. Brave, but stupid. I love her and her stubbornness and her ability to pick locks because of her weaving abilities. Plus seeing her and Apollo banter and learn about all the things of the 21st century is hilarious. Leo's sass and sarcasm is always appreciated.
Lastly I'd like to mention that I'm VERY EXCITED about this prophecy because it mentions the Tiber which means Camp Jupiter which means FRANK AND HAZEL AND REYNA and Piper and Jason (-___-). Mainly I'm just really excited to see Frank and Hazel again because they're my favorite kids over at Camp Jupiter, plus I miss them a lot.
