The Frozen River
by Ariel Lawhon
While I don't normally go for Historical Fiction, the Frozen River made me think I probably should. Lawhon's writing provides a similar level of escapism that you get with fantasy, which was a surprising treat considering that the book is based off of a real diary. Martha is a great mature FMC, which in my experience, can be hard to relate to. But, her firey spirit and loyal nature made it easy to understand her and her actions. As she is a midwife, there is a lot of the story surrounding that role, including attending to some harrowing births. While I personally appreciated the raw imagery that made me feel like a fly on the wall in the late 1700s birthing rooms, I could see how others might not enjoy or relate.
