So, while there were a lot of things I enjoyed about this book, something bothered me about it. It wasn't until I read a review of the Twilight movie that I understood what it was. Despite the female protagonist/heroine of the book, the reoccuring themes of misogyny and masochism are hard to get past. The man she loves is understandably upset that his girlfriend's body is being inhabited by an alien "soul" but the repeated beatings that happen to her by his hand, and the hands of other men in the book, are disturbing. This is made all the more disturbing by her persistant feelings for him. I doubt it is meant to, but this scenario recalls that of a domestic abuse victim, rather than that of a love story. This book is about emotional struggle and what it means to be human, but I could have done with out this particular aspect of it especially as it is aimed towards a younger, impressionable audience.
