"The Selection" takes a look at a dystopian future, where the United States has been remade into the country of Illéa. A place ruled by a king and his elite court. It's a world where a caste system is in place that determines a person's worth and ability to earn within a strict structure.

The selection was designed to bring unification between the country as a way for the selected to have a chance to rise above their station and marry into royality. In reality, it's a televised diversion to placate the rising unrest stirred by the rebels.

At the behest of her mother, America Singer reluctantly agrees to put her name in to be one of the possible thirty-five young women vying for a slot in the selection. All for the chance to compete to win Prince Maxon's heart and become the future Queen of Illéa.

Even though America's heart belongs to Aspen, a childhood friend from a different caste. She agrees because of the financial incentive that will help her family survive the coming winter. When she is selected to participate in the competition, her entire world is turned inside out, as she is now elevated to an elite status and gets a true glimpse into a completely different world.

This is definitely a young YA book that kicks off a dyatopian romance series at the center of which stands a love triangle and the desire of/for freedom. I really enjoyed America's journey as she wrestles with the truth behind the glamour.
