Hunter's Way by Gerri Hill

3.0

I'm pretty sure that I've read this one before. Or maybe it's just I've read alot of dark, damaged, broody, lesbian, hard-ass, break-all-the-rules police detectives who team up with a hot straight (at least for right now) partner and solve serial killer cases books.

Tori Hunter is the broody homicide cop that doesn't play nicely with others (seven partners in six years - of whom several were killed on the job, on disability or quit) but always closes her cases. As a last ditch effort, her Lt assigns a newly transfered detective to be her partner. Samanatha Kennedy is Tori's polar opposite and of course the sparks fly. I liked the interaction/banter between the two and develops nicely into a friendship and then more.

The plot revolves around a series of murders that ends up racking up quite a lot of bodies in a relatively short time frame. There's some side plots involving drug busts/turf wars, domestic terrorism and Samantha's rather boring boyfriend but the serial killings (and developing romance) are the focus of the book.

From a non-stop action standpoint, I enjoyed the book - not sure that homicide cops would get involved in drug busts and domestic terrorism, but it threw the unlikely partners together in some high adrenaline situations that got the romance brewing.

Hill writes a good story with engaging characters and the romance takes enough time to develop to make it believable.
Spoiler My only reservation is Sam's reaction to the assault by Sanchez Gomez's men (make that two reservations ... the name Sanchez Gomez ...really?)
