The Wind in the Willows
by Kenneth Grahame
A nostalgia reread. Reading this as a kid, I didn't pick up on the oddness of sentient people-like animals intermingling with human society, but also using other animals in the way people do—riding horses, eating meat, etc. I guess the wild animals are sentient and not the farm animals?? At least I hope so...
The best parts were in the beginning, with the boating, and the growing friendship between Ratty and Mole, and Mole getting lost in the forest, etc. Also all the picnics made me crave cold meats and pickles. I particularly enjoyed Grahame's descriptions of how the changing of the seasons affected the characters, and his idea of how it feels to them to be called by their instincts.
While the parts about Toad are amusing, they aren't as great as I remembered (mostly because it's a lot harder to overlook how awful his behavior is as an adult), and they also took up a much larger part of the book than I recalled.
