Athena: Grey-Eyed Goddess by George O'Connor
4.0
Athena (and all the virgin goddesses, really) was my favorite when I was a teen: Warrior, wise, what's not to love?
Well- there is the whole Medusa thing. Though George spins it a bit: I remembered that Medusa was raped by Poseidon, which makes Athena's punishment strictly Hera-class retaliation against the victim.
George presents it as Medusa accepting Poseidon as her lover and basically defiling Athena's temple (a virgin goddess temple) by using it as a trysting place. Poseidon slinks off to the ocean, because what Olympian male ever really suffers for his philandering, and Medusa definitely gets the short end of the stick. Still: She's immortalized and becomes part of Athena's aegis, so - silver linings?
And the same with Arachne - the punishment is not just about her boast, but about her contempt for the gods (okay, their highlighted actions are contemptible, but if you're going to keep power, that kind of disrespect can't stand).
