This book was delicious from beginning to end. Even though booktok had set it up to be a romance, I would argue that it is a mystery with romance as a sub genre. Let me begin with saying I RARELY dish out high 4 stars (not jn a pretentious ‘I’m better than you way’, more like a “wow nothing really sucks me in and hits a part of me properly”) BUT THIS?! THIS DID EXACTLY THAT. I don’t think there was a moment in this book where I had drifted off (a common occurrence for me), I really liked how there were clues scattered all over the book and how everything comes FULL CIRCLE (so satisfying!) and I loved how we got to solve everything with Avery! Overall, the plot was so masterfully crafted and I’m so excited to read the entire series.

Onto the characters, WOWWWOWOWOW! Every character is extremely complex and mysterious in their own right. I want to point out how I loved that the author tried to show every character’s flaws and how complex they were— specifically Avery’s. Avery (while a girlboss) occasionally was so altruistic it had me SCREAMING. Like poor Max :(( but then when you look at the bigger picture, you could also empathize with Avery as well since, hello? Her world turned upside down and she constantly has to face her own issues as well. I get why she was so caught up with her own problems…I mean she got shot lmao. In a realistic setting I think the author could’ve worked a bit more on this flaw however I think in this instance the flaw was just there to further heighten the complexity of the characters they had masterfully created.

Overall, this story was carefully curated from start to end and was such an amazing read. Definitely will read every single mystery the author shits out from now on!
