Was this book well written? Absolutely. However, I found it to be TOO serious and dark. None of the events in the book are out of the realm of possibility, and perhaps that aspect was so disturbing and I couldn't fully enjoy it . Too much death, too much sadness. The content just wasn't for me. Also, the dog death was absolutely unnecessary. She writes a letter to the reader at the end of the book to justify it, but the WAY in which the dog died was really F***ed up, in my opinion, and could have been left out of the story. I enjoyed the writing enough that I'd check out another book from this author, but I'd caution against this particular book if topics of death, violence, SA, pandemics/lockdowns, religious cults, and fires are triggering for you. And one more thing I'd like to add: the romantic feelings between a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD and twenty four year old should not have occurred in the first place. Let's stop romanticizing adult-minor relationships please.
Graphic: Animal death, Body horror, Death, Gore, Hate crime, Rape, Sexual violence, Suicide, Terminal illness, Grief, Religious bigotry, Death of parent, Fire/Fire injury, and Pandemic/Epidemic
